Lake Oconee Restaurant Guide: Dining & Drink FAQs

Finding the best places to eat and drink around the water is a top priority for residents and visitors alike. The local scene features a diverse mix of casual eateries, a few waterfront hotspots, and upscale taverns, but navigating the logistics of dining out here requires a bit of local insight. From knowing exactly which Lake Oconee restaurants feature dedicated docks for boat-accessible dining to tracking down the absolute best signature cocktails in the area, having a clear menu roadmap makes all the difference. Below are the definitive answers to the most frequently asked questions regarding the dining, drinking, and restaurant landscape around the lake.

Why are there so many Mexican restaurants around Lake Oconee?

The high concentration of Mexican restaurants around Lake Oconee is the result of a unique demographic intersection and the laid-back nature of lake life. Because our Lake Country footprint spans multiple counties—primarily Greene and Putnam—the central commercial hubs of Greensboro and Eatonton have naturally adapted to serve a diverse population, ranging from luxury resort residents to the local workforce that drives the region’s construction and hospitality industries.
Mexican cuisine happens to perfectly bridge that gap, making these spots some of the most successful Lake Oconee restaurants in the region for several distinct reasons:
The Post-Lake Crowd Pleasers: After a long day out on the water, nobody wants to get dressed up for a stiff, formal dinner. Mexican restaurants are uniquely suited for lake crowds because they offer a highly casual, unpretentious atmosphere where you can walk in wearing your flip-flops, get rapid service, and easily seat massive extended families or large groups of friends.
The “Margarita Factor”: Local favorites like Pedro’s Mexican Grill & Cantina and El Sitio Mexican Grill thrive because they masterfully cater to everyone at once. Parents can unwind with a top-shelf vacation cocktail while the kitchen quickly pumps out meals for the kids.
A True Local Subculture: If you want to see where the actual full-time residents eat step into any of these restaurants on a Friday night. Every local has their fierce favorite, and you will almost always find yourself surrounded by more neighbors than tourists.
Local Insider Tip: Do not miss the massive annual Cinco de Mayo celebration hosted by Pedro’s. It is practically a local holiday around here, complete with outdoor tents, live entertainment, and a massive community-wide turnout that takes over the evening!

Where can I find the best martini? Bloody mary?

As a vacation and relocation destination, the Lake Country cocktail scene is highly active. To put the local beverage culture into perspective, the local Publix is widely known among residents as one of the only locations with a full-time, dedicated beer stocker on staff. At one time Greene Co even featured three different liquor stores within a five-minute walking radius. And we can’t forget the convenience of Brush Creek Package and its drive-thru window.
When looking for the absolute best execution of signature drinks, these are the top-rated local establishments:
• The Best Martini: The Silver Moon: Located on the Putnam side of the lake, this legendary local establishment serves up the best martinis in the area. It is a favorite neighborhood gathering spot year-round.
• The Best Bloody Mary: Lake Oconee Bistro: For a fantastic weekend brunch option, Lake Oconee Bistro is famous for its customizable Bloody Mary options.
• The Best Pain Killer: The Burch x Boathouse: Situated on the water at the Harbor Club Marina, this indoor/outdoor venue is accessible by both car and boat. And in those frozen drink machines (when available) you can frequently find the famous Pain Killer floating around.
• The Best Neighborhood Bar: Sammys: If you want a true neighborhood feel where you can sit and chat with the bartender, Sammy’s is your place. Monte and Shelly have created the perfect atmosphere for a laid back cocktail and some fantastic bar eats.
• The Best Margarita: Pedro’s Mexican Grill & Cantina: For an expensive but ridiculouly good skinny Margarita, Pedro’s remains the community favorite for volume, flavor, and a festive atmosphere.
• The Best Drink With a View: Gaby’s by the Lake: Located poolside at The Ritz-Carlton, Gaby’s offers panoramic waterfront views of Lake Oconee

What restaurants can I access by boat on Lake Oconee?

As the second-largest lake in Georgia, you might expect Lake Oconee to be teeming with waterfront restaurants. Surprisingly, it has very few. Strict Georgia Power regulations on lakefront property limit the amount of commercial land available for dining establishments.
In fact, there are only four boat-up dining options on the entire lake. Finding them is easy: it really comes down to two on the East Side and two on the West Side.
The East Side
1. Gaby’s at The Ritz-Carlton Lake Oconee
While some locals feel the value can lack for the price, no one can deny that Gaby’s has always held the absolute best location with the most stunning views on the water.
The Vibe: Casual luxury. You can sit and admire the lake view alongside the beautiful campus of The Ritz, watching guests who are paying four figures a night relax by the pool.
The Menu: It changes regularly. If you fall in love with a dish one summer, chances are it might be gone the next.
Insider Boating Tip: The $20 drinks are always on point, and absolutely nowhere beats that view. It’s worth the stop just for the scenery.
2. Boathouse x Burch
Brought to you by the experienced owners of Table at the Lake, the Boathouse has finally brought a winning concept to a venue that struggled for several years.
The Vibe: Highly welcoming and energetic. Fresh drinks, a fantastic menu with daily specials, and winning attitudes prevail here.
Insider Boating Tip: On busy summer days, the docks get completely jammed up. Try to time your arrival for slightly before or after the main lunch and dinner rush.
Local Secret: Make sure to follow them on Instagram for their daily special updates before you tie up!
The West Side
3. Italian Chophouse | Lakefront Pavilion on Lake Oconee
The Italian Chophouse opened in 2026 to the great relief of Lake Oconee residents, who were tired of driving past a perfectly located, vacant building with amazing dock space.
The Vibe: Dual-concept. The highly experienced owner of The Bistro completely revamped the space and added a massive outdoor pavilion geared specifically toward boaters looking to take a break from the water.
The Schedule: The outdoor pavilion is open from 11 AM to 6 PM, Thursday through Monday.
Insider Boating Tip: If you plan to dine inside the main restaurant, you will need to dress a bit more formal—leave the bikinis and flip-flops on the boat for this one.
4. The Lakehouse & Tap
Located at the site of the old Georgia Butts, this restaurant sits in a prime location dead center in the middle of the Lake Oconee commercial district on the Eatonton side.
The Vibe: Fun, relaxed, and perfect for weekends. Expect an outdoor patio, live music, and great drink specials.
The Menu: Classic lake fare—think cold beers and great burgers.
Insider Boating Tip: They are located right next to the base for Young Harris boat rentals. If you happen to find yourself boatless on the lake, you can rent a pontoon right here in addition to grabbing a burger!
⚓ Margie’s Personal Note on Local History
Granite Shoals Marina originally opened in 1979 and eventually grew into a full marina, store, restaurant/bar, and even a hotel. The restaurant went by Granite Shoals and The Sandbar over the years and was a hugely popular hangout spot for local fishermen.
The site was purchased by Harbor Club in 2013. The old “hotel” portion was actually used for local firefighter training before they cleared the area for new boat storage, and the restaurant space was remodeled into what is now Boathouse x Burch.
