Moving to a tight-knit lake community means trading city anonymity for a place where everybody knows your name—and usually, what you bought at the grocery store. In a small town like Lake Oconee, the local grapevine moves faster than a jet ski on flat water. As a Greene County native, I’ve been asked every question imaginable about the area. And over the years I’ve witnessed it all – from bumper cars in the Publix parking lot to chaotic county zoning meetings. Secrets leak and everyday observations morph into neighborhood legends. Whether you are a lifelong resident or a newcomer trying to decode the local culture, it is time to separate fact from fiction. Let’s dive into the real truths, wildest rumors, and unspoken rules that define life behind the gates and on the water at Lake Oconee.

What is up with the Publix parking lot? Where did these people learn to drive?

Traffic may be considerably more congested than before covid throughout the Lake Country, but on most days residents driving around the area can count the number of stoplights they traverse on one hand. That means, until the new Publix in Putnam county is complete, there’s only one place where cars (and people) really get close to each other. Throw in a large concentration of drivers over 70 and a bunch of pedestrians and you have a recipe for anxiety and poor decisions.

Can you wear a thong bikini on Lake Oconee?

Yes, you can wear a thong on Lake Oconee. A quick #tag search on instagram or tiktok brings up all the young ladies sporting these tiny swimsuits all out around the lake. While we are still a southern, family destination no one can deny the social media influence so, yes, cheeks are out and about on Lake Oconee everywhere. I see them cruise by our house all the time! I will remind you to NOT wear a white swimsuit of any sort in the lake. With a red clay base, the water will permanently discolor anything resembling white. Also, keep in mind that most pools and clubs have restrictions against thong bikinis and even less exposing cheeky cuts, including all the pools within Reynolds Lake Oconee. So save your thongs and g-strings for private pools, boats, and those sandbar gatherings!

Why are there lines of people waiting outside restaurants like the Silver Moon and Santoros at 4:45pm most every day of the week?

The simple answer – Del Webb. Older folks tend to eat earlier. So restaurants around here prepare for a 5pm rush. The absolute best time to head into most of these restaurants is after 7:30 when those guys and families with younger children are headed for bed.

Is the upside down pineapple in your Publix cart really a thing?

Many rumors exist out here in the Lake Country of wild couples with loose restrictions on manogamy. I’ve heard the stories for years! I won’t even think about putting a pineapple in my Publix cart because of it. I did hear these stories more frequently back in 2010-2015, when the population was smaller and the environment was a bit more “intimate.” But I can say that in all my years here at Lake Oconee I’ve never personally seen a single instance of the swinger lifestyle. Maybe I’m just not invited to those parties though?

Why does it seem so many people on Nextdoor Lake Oconee community are so angry?

Lake Oconee gained an unbelievable number of younger families from 2020-2024 during what you might call the Covid boom. But the area is still predominately a retirement community. So with that you have retired attorneys, retired politicians, retired city and county managers, urban planners, etc. Those people, along with all the other converts escaping daily traffic in metropolitan areas for a slower life morph into some powerful keyboard warriors. And they make their opinions on local politics and development loud and clear. Think of it like a Google hotel review. For every one bad review there were hundreds of perfect stays that remained silent and never left a review. Nextdoor is a great place to find local resources but I also look at it as a fantastic source of local entertainment!

I’m single. Are there other singles? Is there anywhere to meet singles?

There are singles around Lake Oconee…but there’s not a plethora of them. Because of our combination as a family and retirement destination much of the predominant singles age group (20’s and young 30’s) doesn’t live here full time. We do have them but many travel this way daily from Milledgeville and Athens to work service jobs in the area. So what are your best bets? Same as any city, just in lower numbers. Church, bars, pools, and any civic or activity groups. And I’m not single or looking but if you are a member at Reynolds and a golfer there’s another great way to meet people. My husband doesn’t golf and my schedule doesn’t always work out with friends to play. So I go solo and join into an existing group on the Reynolds app that isn’t a full foursome yet. It’s been a fantastic way to meet folks.
